VERSE COLLECTION · THE ART OF EMBROIDERY

Verse

A quiet expression,
one stitch at a time.

A language of the hand

Where a line
becomes an image.

A thread passes through cloth. As the stitches gather, they begin to describe a shape: the turn of a leaf, the edge of a petal, a passage from shadow into light.

Chinese embroidery holds many distinct traditions. Suzhou, Hunan, Guangdong and Sichuan each have their own histories and approaches. Within this wider world, the meeting of embroidery and painting offers one way to understand the needle as an instrument of expression.

Direction

The path of a stitch can follow a contour, turning a line into the suggestion of form.

Colour

Neighbouring tones can soften an edge or carry the eye from light into shade.

Rhythm

Length, spacing and repetition give the surface its pace. Detail rewards a closer look.

THREE MOVEMENTS · SIX MOMENTS

From a drawing.
Into thread.

A closer look at preparation, stitching and finishing. These six moments offer a way into the craft; regional and studio methods vary.

01 / PREPARE

Before the needle.
A considered beginning.

The drawing guides the hand. The ground supports the stitch.

01

Compose & sample

A drawing establishes scale, contours and the balance between stitched areas and open cloth. Small samples help test how the chosen threads and stitches translate the image; the embroidered result need not imitate every mark on paper.

02

Prepare the ground

Position the design on the chosen ground fabric and support it for stitching. A suitable hoop or frame keeps the working area steady; the preparation and tension depend on the fabric and technique.

02 / STITCH

A line becomes
colour and light.

The character of the image emerges through the choices made with each thread.

03

Choose & prepare the thread

Colour, thickness and lustre shape the mark. In some silk-embroidery practices, a thread is split into finer strands for delicate work. Splitting is a specific technique, not a requirement of all hand embroidery.

04

Build the image

Stitches follow the intended contours, with length, direction and spacing considered together. Long-and-short shading is one approach to blending neighbouring tones; other traditions use different stitch vocabularies. The needle builds the image through the cloth.

03 / FINISH

The last stitch.
The whole image.

Look closely at the detail, then step back to read the surface.

05

Review & refine

Read the work both close up and at a distance. Consider how contours meet, how colours move across the image and how the stitches sit against the ground. Adjustments are part of making, and may happen throughout the work.

06

Finish for its purpose

Secure and inspect the work using the finishing method appropriate to the technique. The reverse, edges and ground all matter. Removal from the frame and any later mounting or assembly follow the needs of the finished object.

Silverwork · A line in Miao silverView image +

The Olsevi dialogue

A soft line.
A silver boundary.

A needle draws through cloth; a chasing tool can mark the surface of Miao silver. Both invite attention to the character of a line.

Verse brings embroidery into Olsevi’s dialogue between silver and textile. The defined edge of Miao silver gives the eye a place to pause; the movement of thread draws it inward.

An expression
worth looking closer at.

A quiet pattern, a considered contour, the intimacy of detail. This is the world of Verse.
