VEIL · CLOTH & CULTURE

A pattern kept.
A story carried.

In Danzhai, Guizhou, Miao batik belongs to everyday life: clothing, household textiles and baby carriers. Skills have passed between generations, including from mothers to daughters.

For Olsevi, this relationship between making and living gives cloth its resonance. Veil draws our attention to what a surface can hold—and what a closer look can reveal.

The craft below follows the Danzhai heritage account; regional methods differ.

THREE MOVEMENTS · SIX MOMENTS

What is held.
What is revealed.

Follow the cloth through reserve, dye and release. Each movement changes what can be seen.

01 / RESERVE

The drawing
held in wax.

The first gesture is a boundary.

Wax drawing · A line held in reserve
01 Prepare the cloth

Filtered plant-ash water removes fats from the fibres, preparing the cloth for waxing and dyeing.

02 Draw with wax

Heated wax becomes liquid. A wax tool applies the drawing, protecting selected areas from dye.

02 / DYE

Colour enters
around the drawing.

The reserved line holds its place.

03 · Indigo immersion
03 Enter the indigo

The waxed cloth is dampened in warm water, then repeatedly immersed in a prepared indigo vat.

04 · Rinsing loose colour
04 Rinse away loose colour

Once dyed, the cloth is rinsed to remove loose colour. This rinse precedes wax removal.

03 / REVEAL

The wax leaves.
The drawing remains.

What was protected becomes visible.

05 · Boiling to release wax
05 Release the wax

The cloth is boiled in water. Melted wax rises to the surface and can be recovered.

06 Rinse once more

Repeated rinsing removes remaining wax. The protected drawing can now be read against the dyed cloth.

FROM CLOTH TO FORM

A new frame
in silver.

Within Olsevi’s silver forms, batik cotton brings softness to a defined edge. Light moves across the Miao silver; the textile invites a closer look.

Together, they express a considered balance of presence and restraint.
